Communications Advisor

We're a creative, high-energy team leading the way in strategic communications, marketing, design, video and digital engagement for Invercargill City Council. From promoting our much-loved facilities like Splash Palace, the Civic Theatre and Te Unua Museum of Southland, to leading internal and external communications that strengthen connections across Council and our community, everything we do is about building pride, trust and connection across our city.
We're looking for a talented Communications Advisor who's passionate about storytelling, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and wants to make a genuine difference in their community.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Create clear, engaging and accessible communications across channels including media, publications, newsletters, web, intranet and social.
- Develop and deliver external and internal communication plans that bring Council projects and strategies to life.
- Provide trusted communications and media advice to the Executive Leadership Team and elected members.
- Build strong relationships with media and community partners.
- Champion the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi through inclusive and respectful communication.
What you will bring:
- A qualification in communications, journalism or a related field, and at least two years' experience in a similar role.
- Strong writing skills with the ability to adapt for different audiences and channels.
- A sharp understanding of reputational risk and how to communicate with clarity and care.
- Proven experience in developing communication plans and strategies that deliver results.
- Confidence and experience using digital communications platforms and tools.
- Confidence working in a political or public-sector environment.
- A current full New Zealand driver's licence.
