Collections Technician

Invercargill City Council's Museum and Heritage Services team is seeking three Collections Technicians to help care for, document, and make Southland's rich art and heritage collections accessible. This is a hands-on, detail-driven role at the heart of museum practice, supporting collection storage, conservation, cataloguing, and exhibition delivery — including the exciting development of Te Unua Museum of Southland.
Working alongside experienced museum professionals, you'll play a key role in ensuring collections are managed to best-practice standards and are ready to support exhibitions, research, and public access now and into the future.
The hours of work for this position is 8:00am - 5:00pm Monday - Friday.
Key responsibilities for this role include:
- Undertaking packing, storage and movement of collections in line with museum standards
- Undertaking cataloguing, research, and documentation of collections
- Identifying and managing collection hazards and supporting preventive conservation activities
- Supporting the delivery of exhibitions and programmes
- Maintaining strong relationships across the arts, culture and heritage sector in Invercargill and Southland; and with partners, stakeholders and communities.
What you will bring:
- Post-graduate qualification in Museum Studies, or equivalent experience.
- Tertiary qualification in the Arts, Social Sciences or a related field of study.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience working in a public museum, art gallery or heritage organisation.
- A high degree of self-motivation, organisation, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated understanding of current collection management principles and methods and how these apply to museum practice in Aotearoa
